Histoire Naturelle by Buffon

Georges-Louis Leclerc, Comte de Buffon (1707 – 1788) was a French naturalist, mathematician, cosmologist, and encyclopédiste.
His works influenced the next two generations of naturalists, including Jean-Baptiste Lamarck and Georges Cuvier. Buffon published thirty-six quarto volumes of his Histoire Naturelle during his lifetime; with additional volumes based on his notes and further research being published in the two decades following his death.

We have a great honor to deposit 23 volumes Buffon's Histoire Naturelle, from which 16 volumes are known to be the only ones in Estonia, in our collection.

Previous owner of these books in the beginning of the 20th century was Karl Eduard von Liphart, Baltic-German doctor, scientist, art critic and collector.

Historie Naturelle and other rare books, for example „Agrostographia sive Graminum, Juncorum, Cyperorum Cyperoidum, iisque affinium Historia“ (1719) ; "Caroli a Linné, ... Systema Naturae per regna tria naturae, secundum classes, ordines, genera, species, cum characteribus, differentiis, synonymis, locis" (1788–1793), were given to our library from Institute of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences.
