In search of the farm garden pattern on 1920s-1930s

Model made by Hannes Aava

Based on the historical yard plans eight models of the Estonian farm gardens were created by the EULS landscape architecture students. Their supervisor was Mari Nõmmela (PhD). The models are presented in our library.

Mari Nõmmela: At a time when there was no national garden and park culture, the peasant family established the farm garden themselves. The change in garden design took place in the 1920, when the fruit trees and berry bushes were planted closer to the houses. Vegetable and potato land was left further away. In the 1930s, there were two clearly separated sections in the farm gardens, one for fruit trees, and the other for ornamental trees, shrubs, flower beds, grass, garden buildings etc.

The garden pattern was filtered during twenty years of gardening practice.

The exhibition is open until September 30th.

You are very welcome!
