Jazzkaar surprise concert at the library

Jazzkaar’s urban space project is a program made up of exciting performance venues and artists that, during the Jazzkaar festival, offers musical surprises beyond traditional concert halls. Performances take place on city streets, on public transport, at the airport, in cafés, and elsewhere around the city. Live music is brought closer to people—seeing musicians play their instruments inspires audiences and brings welcome variety to everyday life.

We are pleased to announce that as part of Jazzkaar’s urban space project, the library will host a musical surprise by Susanna Viktoria Mõtsmees, a musician who has emerged from Estonia’s traditional folk music scene. Her music is a symbiosis of tradition and electronics, bringing together folklore, flute and bagpipe sounds, gentle vocals, and engaging rhythms.

In her creative work, she uses archival recordings and diary entries from her grandparents. For example, the album "Mõtsmees" brought together two distant generations of one family—something that would not otherwise have been possible. As Susanna Viktoria explains: “This album is very special to me, because through this project I am able to make music together with my great‑grandfather Leonhard, whom I never had the chance to meet in person.”

Susanna Viktoria’s work has also been noticed and recognized within the traditional music scene. Her music has received multiple nominations at the Estonian Traditional Music Awards (Etnokulp) in the different categories.
