Opening of Toomas Kuusing’s exhibition "Ordinary Worlds"

Toomas Kuusing: In the world we live in, there is no longer a universally valid truth, nor is there any firm basis for distinguishing between reality and invention. The balance between reality and fiction has shifted. We live inside a vast image. An artist no longer needs to invent content for their work — fiction already exists.

This exhibition presents a selection of the artist’s graphic and painting works, which, under the same title, form a conceptual continuation of the central themes that have defined his practice over the past nearly twenty years.

The scenes depicted in Kuusing’s works are mostly imaginative stagings. At first glance, they may appear visually absurd, but for the artist, the themes he portrays are fundamentally serious, topical, or even troubling. To keep the works from becoming overly dark, he seasons them with humor ranging from naïve playfulness to sharp grotesque, irony, and social critique.
