Spring brought welcome news. Despite the stormy winds of technology, the economy, and politics, the oldest Estonian‑language professional journal began appearing again after a year’s pause – Eesti Mets (Estonian Forest).
The journal’s first issue was published 105 years ago, in January 1921. Its first uninterrupted period of publication lasted until the end of 1940.
In 1941, a new journal titled Metsamajandus (Forestry) began publication, with three issues released. After a brief interruption, the publication appeared again under its original name in 1943–1944.
From 1949 to 1976, the journal Eesti Metsamees Eksiilis (Estonian Forester in Exile) was published in exile. Some forestry historians consider it a continuous successor to Eesti Mets, while others reject this interpretation.
The journal was revived in 1989, when winds of renewal were blowing through society and enterprising forestry professionals recognized the opportunity.
The final issue of Eesti Mets, a journal published for more than a century, was the fourth issue of 2024. Yet a new chapter is now beginning—with the hope that Estonia’s forests and the meaning of forestry will continue to be held in high regard in the decades to come.
